When you hear the words “you’re having twins,” it’s normal to feel a mix of excitement and concern. One of the most common questions expecting parents have is: Are twin pregnancies high risk?
The short answer is yes, twin pregnancies are classified as high risk because carrying two (or more) babies comes with additional medical considerations. However, this doesn’t mean that complications are inevitable. With the right prenatal care, monitoring, and lifestyle adjustments, many twin pregnancies result in healthy moms and babies.

- Preeclampsia: High blood pressure and protein in the urine occur more often in twin pregnancies. Monitor the swelling in your feet and legs too. Swelling can be a symptom of Preeclampsia.
- Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS): A rare condition that affects identical twins sharing a placenta.

With twins, you’ll likely have more doctor visits than with a singleton pregnancy. These frequent checkups allow your healthcare provider to:
- Monitor growth and development of both babies.
- Check for signs of preterm labor or complications.
- Perform regular ultrasounds to assess amniotic fluid levels, placentas, and overall health.
2. Specialized Ultrasounds
Twin pregnancies often involve additional ultrasounds to closely monitor the babies’ growth and placental function. For instance:
- Dichorionic twins (twins with separate placentas) are typically monitored every 4 weeks. But as my pregnancy with my Dichorionic twins progressed, I was eventually seen every 2 weeks.
- Monochorionic twins (twins sharing a placenta) may require ultrasounds every 2 weeks to check for TTTS.
