How to Power Pump for Twins
Becoming a mom of twins has its challenges, one of them being maintaining an adequate breast milk supply. (If you should choose to breastfeed).
Power pumping is an effective technique that was taught to me by my lactation consultant when I was in the hospital. It can help you increase your milk production to better provide for twins.
In this guide, we’ll walk you through the ins and outs of how to power pump for twins, sharing tips and strategies to make it work for you and your babies.

What Is Power Pumping?
Power pumping is a breast pumping technique designed to mimic the cluster feeding pattern of your babies.
It involves pumping for shorter, more frequent intervals over a set period to signal your body to produce more milk. The goal is to stimulate your breasts to produce milk more efficiently.
Getting Started:
- Invest in a Good Breast Pump:
To effectively power pump, you’ll need a reliable double electric breast pump. Choose a pump that suits your needs and comfort preferences, and ensure it’s in good working condition. Spectra, Modella, and Elvie are three brands that I would recommend. - Create a Pumping Schedule:
Establish a regular pumping schedule that works for you and your twins. Many moms find success with power pumping sessions in the morning when milk production tends to be higher. - Find a Quiet, Relaxing Space:
Create a comfortable and peaceful pumping environment. Dim the lights, play soothing music, or engage in relaxation techniques like deep breathing to help you relax while pumping.
Power Pumping Routine:
- Warm-Up:
Start with a brief warm-up session of 2-5 minutes to stimulate your letdown reflex. Use a lower suction setting during this phase. - Power Pumping Cycle:
The core of power pumping consists of several cycles of pumping and resting. A common cycle is:
- Pump for 20 minutes
- Rest for 10 minutes
- Pump for 10 minutes
- Rest for 10 minutes
- Pump for 10 minutes
- Massage and Compression:
During the rest intervals, gently massage and compress your breasts to encourage better milk flow and emptying. - Hands-On Pumping:
Consider using hands-on pumping techniques to maximize milk extraction. This involves using your hands to compress your breasts while pumping. - Stay Hydrated and Nourished:
Drink plenty of water and maintain a well-balanced diet rich in lactation-friendly foods. Oatmeal, fenugreek, and brewer’s yeast are known to support milk production. - Stay Consistent:
Consistency is key to power pumping. Stick to your schedule and repeat the power pumping routine once or twice a day for several days to see results.

Monitor your twins’ feeding habits and watch for signs of increased milk supply, such as more frequent wet diapers and weight gain.

So, I would personally still want to have one of these pumps for power, in addition to a hands-free option for mobility and convenience.

This is perfect if you want to try a hands-free pump and don’t mind it not being the most discrete or the most quiet (we recommend the Elvie, instead, if this is a priority).
